How to Make Unusual Sheer Tulle Placemats with Star Crochet Flower

A Sheer Dining Table Experience!

Just as sheer stockings on a woman’s bare legs are alluringly sexy, so too these ‘Sheer Tulle Placemats with Star Crochet Flower’ will bring sensual elegance to your dining table.

I love the ‘see-through’ element of my glass dining table top because it gives my dining room area a contemporary, sunny and entertaining feel.  However, each time I placed regular place mats on my dining table, I felt like I was blocking out that liberating experience and ruining the very thing that I loved about that glass dining table.

Therefore, I decided to make myself some Sheer Tulle Table Mats to enjoy the best of both worlds - the traditional place mat, to put crockery and cutlery on while dining and stylish elegance that would allow me to see through my glass dining table top.

So, in this blog post, I will provide you with detailed instructions and photos of this mixed crochet and sewing project, so that you can try it yourself.

This DIY project will be broken down into five main sections as follows:

1.    The Material and Tools Needed to Make the Sheer Tulle Placemats

2.    How to Make the Sheer Tulle Place Mats

3.    How to Crochet the Star Flower Motif with Corolla

4.    How to Embellish the Sheer Tulle Table Mats with Embroidery

(2) How to Make the Sheer Tulle Place Mats

§  Measure out the white tulle fine mesh material, using your measuring tape for general measurement and your ruler for more precise edges.

§  Cut out your table mats from the white tulle fine mesh material using your scissors. Each placemat should measure 18 inches by 15 inches.

Suggestion: You can fold and cut two placemat pieces at the same time since the material is very thin.

§  Temporarily pin down your desired lace ribbon trim or edging along all 4 sides of your Sheer Tulle Placemat using pins (or needles).

§  Securely attach your edging to all 4 sides of the Sheer Tulle Placemat using Blanket Stitches with your desired colour of embroidery floss.  For this project, I used Trebla Embroidery Floss Thread Colour No. 108 (Orange).

Sewing Tip: The holes in this tulle material make it easy for you to get even or uniform stitches. I placed the stitches 5 holes apart from each other.

Crochet the first 2 rounds of the ‘Star Flower Motif’:

Ch 4, working first ch loosely.

Round 1: In this first ch (4th chain from hook), work 15 dc; join with sl st to top of initial ch (which counts as first of 16 dc).

Round 2: Ch 4, skip 1st dc, repeat (sc in next dc, ch 3, skip 1 dc) 7 times, ending with sl st in first ch of ch-4.

Crochet the next 2 rounds of the ‘Star Flower Motif’:

Round 3: Ch 7, * reaching behind Round 2, yarn over, and insert hook from back to front around next sc with tip emerging again behind work; draw through loop and work dc.

Round 4: Ch 4, *; repeat from * to * 6 more times, join with sl st in third ch of ch-7.  The ch-3 arches of Round 2 are left unworked and there are 8 ch-4 arches on Round 3.

Crochet the Corolla on top of the ‘Star Flower Motif’:

Make a slip knot on hook, insert hook under an unworked ch-3 arch of Round 2, and attach yarn with a chain.

* Working over ch-3 arch, work sc, ch 1, 3dc, ch 1, sc *.

Repeat from * to * 7 more times. Join with sl st to beginning ch. Fasten off.

Crochet Tip: When completed, the ‘Star Flower Motif with Corolla' measures 2 and a half inches or 6 centimetres in diameter.

(4) How to Embellish the Sheer Tulle Table Mats

In this section, we’ll add decorative embroidery details to the Sheer Tulle Placemats by:

(a)   Crocheting and attaching one stemless leaf.

(b)   Attaching the Star Flower Motif with Corolla that we just crocheted in Step 3 above.

(c)   Using embroidery to sew on a freestyle design.

Crochet the Stemless Leaf

Crochet this simple One Round Stemless Leaf by Jennifer Dickerson, with easy pattern instructions and a video tutorial, at FiberFluxBlog. Once you’ve completed it, set it aside to attach to the Sheer Tulle Table Mat later on.

Attach the Star Flower Motif with Corolla

To attach the Star Flower Motif with Corolla that you made in Step 3 above:

§  Place it in the exact position you want it on the Sheer Tulle Placemat (I attached mine on the top left-hand corner) and hold it in place with your finger or a pin.

§  Then turn the placemat over and attach the Star Flower Motif with Corolla to the placemat using Back Stitches.

Embroidery Tip: Attach the underside of the Corolla first. Then attach each point of the Star Flower using a French Knot or simple knot.

Sew Embroidery Design

Embroider your chosen design to the bottom right-hand corner of the Sheer Tulle Placemat.  For this project, I created a freestyle embroidery design of my own which used two embroidery stitches – Chain Stitch and Satin Stitch:

§  Using orange sewing thread, I sewed 7 vertical Chain Stitches up; 8 horizontal Chain Stitches across; and 10 Chain Stitches for the curved design which linked to the stemless leaf.

§  Using green crochet thread, I embroidered the perpendicular line design using Satin Stitches.
