Honey-Baked BBQ Tuna Fish in Foil Recipe

Culinary Advantages of Tuna Fish

I am a pescatarian. So, it is my passion to cook fish in diverse ways in order to stave off dining boredom. After all, who wants to eat the same thing, prepared the same way, every single day!

Yellowfin tuna is abundant in my Caribbean homeland, Grenada, and it is also my favourite fish.  Additionally, it is a solid fish that stays intact no matter what cooking method you use – i.e., stew, barbecue, bake, grill, boil, sauté, fry or steam. This is an important culinary benefit of Yellowfin tuna which enables it to make good dining presentation when served.

I also intentionally bake the fish in foil because it seals in moisture and keeps the Yellowfin tuna nice and succulent (i.e., tender, juicy and tasty).

Nutritional Benefits of Eating Tuna

“Tuna is one of the best dietary sources of vitamin D which is necessary for bone health, strengthening the immune system against disease, and ensuring optimal growth in children” (WebMD, 2022). It also contains other essential vitamins, such as B12, and contributes to lowering the risk of heart disease.

So, today I will share my special, homemade recipe for making ‘Honey-Baked BBQ Tuna Fish in Foil’.

Preparation Method for Honey-Baked BBQ Fish

If you’re starting with FROZEN Yellowfin tuna:

§  Defrost the tuna by removing it from the freezer, putting it in a covered dish and placing it in the refrigerator overnight (i.e., for about 8 hours).

§  Remove the defrosted tuna from the refrigerator.

§  Continue with the preparation instructions in the ‘DEFROSTED or FRESH tuna’ section below.

If you’re starting with DEFROSTED or FRESH Yellowfin tuna:

§ Wash the defrosted or fresh tuna in a 50-50 mixture of water and vinegar to remove any excess blood and overbearing fishy smell.

§  Cut the tuna into smaller pieces (about 6 pieces).

§  Lightly season the tuna pieces with a mixture of white pepper and salt (½ teaspoon each).

§  Place the seasoned tuna pieces in a clean, covered dish (see Figure 3 above).

§  Put the dish in the refrigerator, for about 15 to 30 minutes, in order to marinate the tuna.

§  While the tuna is marinating in the refrigerator, line the bottom of your Pyrex dish or baking dish with aluminum foil. Make sure to leave an extra piece of foil paper hanging over one side of the baking dish in order to form a covering over the tuna while baking.

§  Mix the barbecue sauce and honey in a bowl and set aside (see Figure 2 above).

§  Mix the vegetable oil, thyme and parsley in a bowl and set aside (see Figure 2 above).

§  Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.

§  While the oven is preheating, remove the dish with seasoned tuna pieces from the refrigerator.

§  Dip each piece of fish in the vegetable oil mixture.

§  Then dip each piece of fish in the BBQ sauce mixture. Make sure that all sides of the fish are thoroughly covered in BBQ sauce.

§  Place each piece of fish the foil-lined baking dish.

Baking Tip: If you’re overly concerned about the fat content in the vegetable oil, then brush coat the tuna pieces instead to reduce the amount of oil. Otherwise, dip the tuna pieces in the vegetable oil mixture to help the fish retain more moisture.

§  Blend together any of the remaining BBQ sauce and honey mix with the vegetable oil mix and pour it over the uncooked tuna in the foil-lined baking dish (see Figure 4 below).

§  Fold the overlapping piece of aluminum foil paper over the tuna pieces, as a covering, and place the baking dish in your preheated oven to bake for 24 minutes.

§  After 24 minutes, remove the baking dish from the oven and uncover it by lifting off the overlapping aluminum foil covering the fish.

§  Put the uncovered baking dish back in the oven and allow the BBQ tuna pieces to bake for a further 6 minutes.

§  Remove the fully baked Honey BBQ Fish from the oven and enjoy with your favourite side dishes.

Lunch Idea for the Honey-Baked BBQ Fish

From the photo in Figure 5 below, you can see that I enjoyed my ‘Honey-Baked BBQ Tuna Fish in Foil’ with saffron rice and cabbage salad.  It was a delicious lunch and a nutritiously colourful combination. You can try it this week for lunch, dinner, or supper.

Store any remaining fish in a tightly sealed container in the refrigerator.
